[Music] [Leisur::Hive] Like Bauhaus? Then Acquire Some of This!
I saw Leisur::Hive last night, by kind invitation. The show was great and everything seemed to go smoothly. The composition and sound of the band make Joy Division comparisons obvious, but, I think, this'd be inaccurate. The 'personality' of the band's much more "observational", rather than "embroiled" - much more as I remember Bauhaus. "Try To Be Still" especially, a fav'e currently on their MySpace, reminds me of Of Lillies and Remains. Well, I may've got in for free, but my urge to buy both the CDs available at the concert, was irresistable. So, everyone's a winner :) I v'much look forward to seeing them again and getting to know them better. In summary, if you like Bauhaus, run, don't walk, to CDbaby.Com and treat yourself to, their latest album, 3 Ton Edition. Now, I need to remember how to remove eyeliner :P n/p: Kraftwerk - Computer Liebe {on Last.FM/user/IanAR}----------------- Original Message ----------------- From: Leisur HiveDate: Jan 25, 2005 01:54 PM Hi Ian, thanks for the response! [Music] [Elza Soares] We Need More! Born and raised in a favela (slum or shantytown) in Rio de Janeiro, daughter of a washerwoman, Elza Soares got married at 12 and had a baby at 13. During that period, Soares took part in a singing contest presented by the renowned Brazilian musician Ary Barroso, and received the highest marks. In the late 50s, she spent one year touring Argentina with Mercedes Batista. Elza Soares became popular with her first single "Se Acaso Você Chegasse" (Lupicínio Rodrigues/ F. Martins), on which she introduced the scat “à la" Louis Armstrong, adding a bit of jazz to samba. Soares moved to São Paulo, where she performed at theaters and nightclubs. Her husky voice became her trademark. After finishing her second LP, "Bossa Negra", Elza went to Chile to represent Brazil in the 1962 World Cup. There, she met her future husband, the soccer icon Mané Garrincha. Some of her hits from the 60’s include "Sambou, Sambou" (J. Melo/ J. Donato), "Mulata Assanhada" (Ataulfo Alves), "Devagar com a Louça" (Haroldo Barbosa/ Luiz Reis), among others. In 1970, on a trip to Italy, she recorded "Que Maravilha" (Jorge Ben) and "Máscara Negra" (Zé Kéti). Her performance of the songs "Maria-vai-com-as-outras" (Vinícius/ Toquinho) and "Saltei de Banda" (Zé Rodrix/ Luiz C. Sá) also became quite popular. Elza Soares’ outgoing and over-the-edge style fascinated audiences in Brazil and abroad. In the 70’s, she toured the U.S. and Europe. During that same decade, she recorded "Salve a Mocidade" and "Malandro". In the 80’s, Elza fell into oblivion until being invited by Caetano Veloso to record with him the song "Língua" (Caetano Veloso). She then recorded two LPs, in 1985 and 1988. At that time, Soares spent some time in the U.S. and in the mid-nineties she made a comeback, participating in several shows, mainly in Rio de Janeiro. In the 90s, the singer finally released two more CDs: "Trajetória" (‘97) and "Carioca da Gema" (recorded live in ‘99). In 2000, she was awarded "Best Singer of the Millenium " by the BBC in London, where she played a concert with Gal Costa, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Virgínia Rodrigues. Still in 2000, she played a series of avant-garde music concerts directed by José Miguel Wisnik in Rio de Janeiro. In 1997 she launched her biography, "Cantando para Não Enlouquecer", written by José Louzeiro.Elza Soares has appeared on a number of Gilles Peterson's compilations. If you've heard her, you may've had trouble finding good info' on her on the Web (if you've not heard her, this may be your lucky day). So here're some of the best sites that I've dig out of my web-searching: English language Google, AltaVista short audio search and AltaVista long audio search. If you like Elza Soares and have a Yahoo! ID (or if you like her so much you're prepared to get a Yahoo! ID, for her benefit), please go here and rate your heart out. This'll encourage Yahoo! to get some of her audio on-line. n/p: Alanis Morissette 2004 Knees Of My Beeson Scrawl Audio Current Mood: refreshed | | 2:37 am |

[Music] [1994] Top Albums
A recent MySpace.Com bulletin repost came to me, on the subject of where/what we were doing ten years ago, and I got to thinking about what were my top albums of that year. So, off the top of my head, here they are (alphabetical order) ... ... to be continued. n/p: Paul Weller 2004 Birds on Scrawl Audio Current Mood: nostalgic | | Thursday, December 16th, 2004 | | 1:22 am |

[Music] My Heart Belongs To Sheffield
Ever thought about which town, in music, is most important, for you? Think about the bands/artists you like and they're influences. Then think of the towns they come from. Which town(s) stand-out, above all others, for the music you like? (For the purposes of this discussion - we define a town as having a population of less than one million.) For me that town is Sheffield, England, population 500,000. From there: Joe Cocker, Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League, ABC, Clock DVA, Chakk, Hula, Heaven 17, LFO, Pulp, Autechre, Baby Bird, Moloko, Longpigs and Pink Grease. Influenced/inspired by those from there: Front 242, D.A.F., KMFDM, SPK, Pet Shop Boys, Skinny Puppy, Underworld, Front Line Assembly, Nine Inch Nails, The Chemical Brothers, Wamdue Project, Air, Flux Information Sciences, Squarepusher, Relaxed Muscle, Elbow, Funkstörung, British Sea Power, Ladytron, Annie, The Postal Service, Client and many others.I don't believe there's any town on the planet with more groove per capita! n/p: Pink Grease 2004 The Pink G.R.EASE on Scrawl Audio Current Mood: bouncy | | Wednesday, December 8th, 2004 | | 6:00 am |
[LAUNCHcast] [IE 6.00.2900.218] Internet Explorer Options Fiddles Required
I just allowed MS to patch my Internet Explorer, the update was described as a "cumulative update", and took my IE from the SP2 level to 6.00.2900.218. Then, the only non-MS site I regularly use IE for, LAUNCHcast radio stopped working. The symptoms were that the pop-up LAUNCHcast radio player stopped with the generic IE "The page cannot be displayed" page, i.e. something(s) went wrong with the serveral hundred things I've been trying, in my attempt to satisfy your request, but I'm damned if I'll give you any clue, as regards what happened. How come? 'Cause you're a member of Microsoft's Eloi © and, thus, you needn't worry your pretty little head about it.However, I availed myself, by following Yahoo!s instructions (also linked at the bottom of the Scrawl Audio section, under music, on my profile) and with a few changes from IE's default, it's now working again. n/p: Chromeo 2004 She'z N Control on Scrawl Audio Current Mood: relieved | | Tuesday, December 7th, 2004 | | 9:00 am |
Cory Doctorow's Microsoft Research DRM Talk
The most important spoiler I've read all year! I'm here today to talk to you about copyright, technology and DRM, I work for the [WWW]Electronic Frontier Foundation on copyright stuff (mostly), and I live in London. I'm not a lawyer -- I'm a kind of mouthpiece/activist type, though occasionally they shave me and stuff me into my Bar Mitzvah suit and send me to a standards body or the UN to stir up trouble. I spend about three weeks a month on the road doing completely weird stuff like going to Microsoft to talk about DRM.
I lead a double life: I'm also a science fiction writer. That means I've got a dog in this fight, because I've been dreaming of making my living from writing since I was 12 years old. Admittedly, my IP-based biz isn't as big as yours, but I guarantee you that it's every bit as important to me as yours is to you.
Here's what I'm here to convince you of:
1. That DRM systems don't work 2. That DRM systems are bad for society 3. That DRM systems are bad for business 4. That DRM systems are bad for artists 5. That DRM is a bad business-move for MSFT
It's a big brief, this talk. Microsoft has sunk a lot of capital into DRM systems, and spent a lot of time sending folks like Martha and Brian and Peter around to various smoke-filled rooms to make sure that Microsoft DRM finds a hospitable home in the future world. Companies like Microsoft steer like old Buicks, and this issue has a lot of forward momentum that will be hard to soak up without driving the engine block back into the driver's compartment. At best I think that Microsoft might convert some of that momentum on DRM into angular momentum, and in so doing, save all our asses.

[London] N/E Old Stomping Ground 1983-94 , 2004- North-East London: I used to know the area quite well - 1983-84 I worked in Hoxton ( Wave Studios), 84-86 lived in Stoke Newington, most 86-89 worked off Oxford St (Swedish management consultancy) and most of 87-94 lived in Dalston. I'm currently setting-up a recording studio in Clapton - π (Red Pi™), where I expect to be working for the next couple of years, so I expect to be refreshing my knowledge. n/p: The Stranglers 1977 Nice 'N' Sleazy on Scrawl Audio Current Mood: nostalgic |
